First Monday Letterboxing

On Saturday, Blue Butterfly and I met for lunch in Athens. I'd considered asking her if she wanted to go letterboxing in Canton after lunch, but thought against it since we letterboxed last week and are DEFINITELY letterboxing next weekend. Lo and behold, during lunch, she tells me she brought clues for Canton and I told her I'd go with her. We left my car in Athens and loaded up her van. We started out by going to Meredith Campground in Walton. When we got there, we saw that the ramp where the LB was supposed to reside is being remodeled, and the box was no where to be found. So, we got back on highway 19 and kept heading north toward Canton.

We made our way to a local cemetery to find two letterboxes there. Blue Butterfly had already found one of the boxes, but not the other. We followed the clues to both boxes, even finding a time capsule buried in the cemetery that will be opened in 2036. Anyhow, we took the boxes back to the Golden Bullet and stamped in without the wind whipping around us.

We left the cemetery to hit a new park where Frogkisses' MY BIRTHDAY SERIES was planted. This was a fun series and we found all three boxes. All of the logbooks are full, so BB left a few extra sheets in the boxes for future finders.

After celebrating the birthday, we made our way to FM 17 to find Starr Cemetery. We easily found the cemetery, but we could not find the box. It looked like all of the bushes had been trimmed and cut back, so we were out of luck on this one.

New PT

I finally got the art work picked out and carved my new personal traveler in time for the next gathering. I will have both of my PTs at this gathering, then will retire my Ramona Quimby one on March 8. She's had a great run and has served me well.

The new PT is based on The Office, as I promised many months ago. You can take a look at the clue on Atlas Quest. The official name of the PT is Dwight K. Schrute.

Assault

I finally got my stamp carved to be planted for the gathering on March 7. The box is called ASSAULT and it refers to the 1946 Triple Crown winner from King Ranch, Texas. Assault injured himself at a young age by stepping on a surveyor's stake, leaving him with a club foot. Against these odds, he went on to great things in his life. Assault is the only Triple Crown winner to ever come from the great state of Texas.

Practice Run

Blue Butterfly called me last Sunday and asked if I could go letterboxing this weekend. Of course I said YES! My work schedule was free, so of course.....let's go! We decided to head out to Waco for the day. I hadn't found most of the LBs there, and I 'd had my eye on some of them for quite some time. I also told her to PLEASE bring her GPS system, because Waco is a strange city to navigate.

We made our way to Waco, then headed to one of the local cemeteries to find three governors there. The governor boxes had their logbooks full. BB had a couple of extra logbooks to leave, but her logbooks were too big for the small boxes. BB tore out a few pages from her logbooks and we folded them up and added them to the box.

It was a nice, quiet morning. The sun was out, but the wind was blowing COLD. Luckily, most of these boxes were drive-bys, so we were able to sit in the van and stamp in within it's shelter.

Next, we headed next door to another cemetery to find a couple of boxes by the Travelin' Ts. We had quite a good time deciphering the clues to find these boxes. The Travelin' Ts did an excellent job of giving us an adventure with these two boxes.

After looking back through the clues, I discovered that there was another box in the other cemetery we'd missed. We found that one, then headed out to find some lunch!

After a good lunch at Fazoli's, we headed downtown to the Dr. Pepper Museum to find Squished Hiker's PEPPER, PH.D. We pulled in to the parking lot and I told BB where to find it--or so I thought. She came back to the van and we had to read over the clue again. This time, we both got out and went to the CORRECT spot. We took the box and stamped in. We didn't go into the museum today, but we enjoyed looking at the retro delivery truck parked outside.

After this, we headed to Cameron Park. BB had an adventure at this park a few years ago, but this was my first time to hit the park. We were going there to find MISS NELLIE'S HIDDEN PICNIC. Miss Nellie's has a fountain and a field of wildflowers, which I'm sure is absolutely beautiful when it is in full bloom. I definitely want to head back there when they are blooming and take a few photos for my photo collection. Anyhow, we followed the trail back to where the picnic was. Then.....BB smelled it first. I finally caught a whiff of it. Something ......was......dead. YUCK! ACK! ICK! We were sitting there at the oh-so-convenient picnic table trying to stamp in, but P.U.! We got out of there as fast as we could.

We left Cameron park and headed back to the Baylor Campus. There is a series called A STRANGER IN TOWN that we were intrigued by. These are four boxes hidden at an historic village near a pond. North Star wrote a little story to go along with this series. We had a good time searching through the village to find all of our prizes. We managed to find three out of four boxes. Box #2 was not to be found.

After getting into our time machine and making our way back to 2009, we drove around the campus to try and find the bear habitat. We heard a rumor that you could see the Baylor Mascot there. After finally finding a map, we made our way to the habitat. Of course, since it is winter, the bears were hibernating. We were able to look through one of the cave windows and see the bears sleeping. We'll have to go back when the bears are awake.

We wanted to find one more box, so we made our way to the Texas Ranger Museum and stamped into TINY TEXAS RANGER. After this, we headed back to Navarro County. WHEW! Hopefully we practiced enough on this day to be ready for the Texas gathering in TWO WEEKS!

It's Almost Here!

Yep, it's that time of year when a letterboxer's fancy turns to gatherings! In two weeks, the 6th Texas Annual Letterboxing Event will take place at Mission Tejas State Park. I'm lucky enough this year to actually take the Friday off, too! Blue Butterfly and I made camping reservations months ago and I can't hardly wait!!

Happy Trails!
